Laying Down Your Life For Others

cb devo jan7“Hereby perceive we the love [of God], because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down [our] lives for the brethren.” 1 John 3:16 (KJV)

Often times we think this verse means to literally give our lives to others, and it could very well mean that in some instances. For example if someone is trying to save someone from drowning and they themselves drown, that is giving their life for someone else. This is not the only way to do that. We can give or lay down our lives in many ways for others. Here are some examples:

 1.     Discipling or mentoring someone. Putting our needs aside to minister to others means we are sacrificing our time to help others grow.  By doing so, we have to be patient and longsuffering.

 2.     Speaking the truth in love. Confrontations are not always easy, but God gives us wisdom. We lay down our reputation, fears, and the possibility of being disliked or rejected. Perhaps we are risking losing a friendship. What is more important –  speaking the truth in love or remaining quiet and doing a disservice to a friend?

 3.     Being kind to others even when they are being unkind to us. It means to keep loving and praying for those who have hurt us – it means forgiveness.

 4.     Loving unconditionally. It means getting out of our comfort zone and being stretched by God to talk to people we normally are uncomfortable talking to. It means reaching out to the people the Pharisees accused God of associating with. Laying our lives down means not being embarrassed to be seen with someone who is struggling with sin that God is calling us to befriend to minister to. It means laying down our reputation.

“Lord, continue to teach me how to lay down my life for others as I ought to.”
